Overview
India does not allow dual citizenship. When an Indian citizen voluntarily acquires Irish citizenship, Indian citizenship ends automatically — and the Indian passport must be surrendered to the Embassy.
The surrender certificate you receive is also a key document for your OCI application. Applying promptly avoids problems, because using an Indian passport after acquiring another nationality is an offence under India's Passports Act.
We help you complete the surrender application and prepare the supporting documents so your surrender certificate is issued smoothly, then help you move on to OCI.

- New Irish citizens who previously held Indian passports.

- Anyone preparing an OCI application who needs a surrender certificate.
Common challenges we solve
- Understanding surrender versus renunciation.
- Preparing the online form and documents correctly.
- Getting the surrender certificate in time to apply for OCI or travel to India.

Important to know
- Using an Indian passport after acquiring another nationality is an offence under the Passports Act and can attract penalties.
- Penalty amounts are set by the Indian authorities; we have not published them because the Dublin schedule could not be verified.
- Fees were revised from 1 July 2026; we confirm the current euro fee before you pay.

Indian Passport Surrender FAQs
Do I need to surrender my Indian passport after becoming Irish?
Yes. Indian citizenship ends when you voluntarily acquire another citizenship, so you must surrender your Indian passport and obtain a surrender certificate.
Is surrender the same as renunciation?
No. Renunciation is for Indian citizens who have not yet acquired another citizenship. If you already hold Irish citizenship, you apply for surrender.
Do I get my old passport back?
The Embassy issues a surrender certificate and the passport is cancelled. Keep both safely — you'll need them for OCI.
Can I travel to India before getting OCI?
Yes, as an Irish citizen you can apply for an Indian e-Visa. See our Indian Visit Visa service.
